The main purpose of this position is to support the firm's software, to act as an application specialist in the firm's application environment, and to provide expertise in managing systems and services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- work under general supervision of more senior technical staff
- act as systems analyst for firm's production software
- establish procedures for installing software in hosted and co-located environments
- ensure adequate documentation is available for production systems
- receive software from QA group
- install software
- provide advice or training to technical support staff and junior operations staff in areas of expertise
- under general supervision, ensure procurement of necessary infrastructure (hardware, networking services, SSL certificates, etc.)
- research and install software and systems
- act as second level support for customer problems (on call after hours)
- support internal and external networks
- general systems administration, especially of software test environment
- help maintain network-based login system security
- install and configure operating systems, hardware, and software on workstations and servers
- work daily on a personal computer
- frequently carry a mobile phone during non-normal working hours
- sometimes work extended periods
- occasionally lift servers, etc., for rack installation
- concentrate under conditions of high stress and short deadlines
- standard open-plan office environment
- sometimes required to work outside regular office hours
- sometimes required to work from remote locations (remote offices, home)
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- minimum 2 years experience in systems administration
- proven facility with AIX, UNIX/Linux and Windows systems in a networked environment
- experience supporting high-availability applications; experience with Java an asset
- familiarity with networking hardware and software (including SSL and IPSec)
- good familiarity with networking technologies including network file systems (NFS, SMB-based systems)
- ability to locate and comprehend technical documents related to problems encountered
- some shell scripting and administrative language (Perl, Tcl, or similar) capability
- ability to research and purchase equipment and services with guidance from senior staff
- degree or diploma in computer science or related field
- knowledge of databases and SQL
- experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL an asset
