Afilias Releases .INFO Domain 2009 Annual Report

Dec 21, 2009

.INFO remains the market leader for new TLDs

DUBLIN, IRELAND - December 21, 2009 - Afilias, a global provider of internet infrastructure services and registry for the .INFO domain, has released the 2009 .INFO Annual Report illustrating .INFO's rise over the past eight years.  .INFO currently ranks seventh among all 270+ Top Level Domains (TLD's) worldwide and first among all new TLDs introduced on the Internet since 2001.

"After 8 years of concerted effort, .INFO is the undisputed most successful new TLD launched to date, accounting for over 40 percent of all new TLD registrations," said Roland LaPlante, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Afilias ".INFO's experience provides many lessons applicable to the launch of new domains to come.  As an organization, Afilias has been able to use our experiences with .INFO as a benchmark for successfully gaining approval for, launching and growing more new TLDs than any other registry services provider."

.INFO, which now boasts over 5.3 million domains, continues to deliver on its mission to provide Internet users with a fast and intuitive way to access information online, with over 70 percent of domains resolving to real content and over 1 million unique Web sites. The top regions for registrations continue to be North America (61 percent) and Europe (23 percent).  However, Asian markets are growing and the region now holds 11 percent of .INFO registrations.

.INFO also continues to gain penetration into the registrar marketplace which offers domain names for retail sale.  .INFO is now available with over 330 distributors that support over 90% of sales volume in the worldwide domain name industry.

In addition to statistics on the health of .INFO, the report also addresses important news and initiatives that .INFO has undertaken over the last year. This includes .INFO's efforts to reach new audiences via Facebook, Twitter, the recent .INFO Awards and the release of an interactive .INFO domain directory at www.info.info/directory .  The report also highlights Afilias' continued efforts and accomplishments at keeping the .INFO domain space and Internet users secure through its Domain Anti-Abuse Policy and supporting initiatives.

".INFO's market leadership has been driven by a combination of its value as an intuitive string with broad appeal, near universal registrar support, effective registry management, reliable technology, and an experienced team with a track record of success in the ICANN community," added LaPlante.

The full 2009 Annual report is available online at http://www.info.info/webfm_send/99.

Afilias statement on ICANN Affirmation of Commitments with US Department of Commerce

Oct 6, 2009
DUBLIN, IRELAND – 6 October 2009 – Today Afilias President & CEO Hal Lubsen released the following statement concerning ICANN’s new Affirmation of Commitments with the US Department of Commerce:

Afilias commends ICANN and the U.S. Department of Commerce on over a decade of work in supporting the Domain Name System and in taking an important step in promoting the private sector led, bottom up consensus model for the DNS. We appreciate the special efforts by Rod Beckstrom, the ICANN staff, Peter Dengate Thrush, the entire ICANN board, and the U.S. Department of Commerce in reaching this new commitment. We are encouraged by the Affirmation of Commitments which provides a framework to ensure ICANN’s accountability and transparency to the global community.  This new framework promises a commitment to a bottom-up, multi-stakeholder development process that will review the positive and negative effects of ICANN’s decisions, including any impact on the public, as well as the systemic security, stability and resiliency of the DNS. The additional focus on consumer protection and internationalization is also most welcome.  Executing on these promises will require the full attention of ICANN and the entire ICANN community.  We look forward to working toward this shared vision.

Afilias Seeks New TLD Partners

Aug 26, 2009

Experienced registry operator offers technical and other assistance for new top-level domain applications to ICANN

DUBLIN, IRELAND – 26 August 2009 – Afilias, a global provider of Internet infrastructure services and domain name registry technology, today announced that it is seeking to partner with a select number of organizations that wish to apply to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for a new top-level domain (TLD).

“Afilias has supported more successful ICANN bids, and helped launch more new TLDs than any other registry services provider,” said Hal Lubsen, Chief Executive Officer at Afilias.  “We are looking for organizations, corporations, and communities who can leverage our experience, financial and marketing resources, and technology to develop successful generic and community TLDs in English or other languages for Internet users around the world.”

TLDs are the names at the top of the DNS naming hierarchy, appearing after the last ‘dot’ of a Web address such as .com, .info, .org, and .me. With ICANN’s new application process expected to launch early in 2010, the opportunity exists for any organization to apply for a TLD that has meaning for their business, community, or interest area.

"New TLDs are excellent opportunities for brands looking to boost their global profile and offer a more personalized and branded experience on the Internet.  A dedicated TLD may also provide a more private, controlled, and secure space for customer and community interaction,” added Roland LaPlante, Chief Marketing Officer at Afilias.  “Organizations that are connected to specific communities and causes may also look at a dedicated TLD as a new means of offering value added services or a potential new source of revenue.”

Afilias supports over 14 million registrations across 15 TLDs, and has the widest range of TLD customers of any major registry services and outsource technical providers.  Afilias launched .INFO, the first new TLD ever chosen by ICANN, in 2001.  Since then, Afilias has built .INFO into the most successful new TLD ever launched with over 5 million domains registered -- more than double the next leading new gTLD.

Afilias' has pioneered many innovations in registry technology, including the first broad scale use of the now industry standard EPP-protocol, the first launch of IDN’s under the new standard, and the largest deployment to date of Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC). In addition, Afilias is a leader in domain name anti-abuse operations and policies to curb spam, phishing, and malware. Afilias currently provides registry and outsourced technical services for the following TLDs:  .info, .org, .aero, .asia, .mobi, .ag, .bz, .gi, .hn, .in, .lc, .me, .mn, .sc, and .vc.

Organizations, corporations, and communities looking to work or partner with Afilias for their new TLD bid and application, can submit their interest directly to Afilias online.
